Spring Break College Tour

The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc recently escorted 41 scholars to nine HBCUs for spring break. During their tour, students spoke with admission directors, campus students, and professors. Application fees were waived to apply to these schools and scholarship information was also given. In addition, students toured the MLK Jr. Center and Ebenezer Baptist Church along with many other tours and activities.  Thanks to our winter fundraising efforts, two scholars were sponsored to experience this life changing event.  Meet our scholars below, Asia Harris and Daylyn Canady.

My name is Asia Harris! First off I would like to say thank you for sponsoring me to attend the HBCU tour. Without your sponsorship I probably wouldn't have been able to attend.

I am a junior at Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School. I am number 4 in my 2019 class maintaining a 3.5 or higher. I participate in a few sports at Lighthouse. I played basketball in middle school, I cheered my freshman and sophomore year, and I currently play volleyball. I love to dance. I have been on a few majorette dance teams here in Indianapolis. I also participated in a club called Girls' Club. We had a chance to listen to the leader's life story and how she overcame an obstacle that allowed her to become a better person.

After I graduate high school, I would like to go into the medical field to either be a Pediatrician, OBGYN, or study law to be an attorney. My dream was to always graduate and attend a HBCU. Attending this college tour would be an awesome experience and confirm that is what I actually want to do after high school.

Hello, my name is Daylyn Canady. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to go on this trip. I really appreciate this because without you I wouldn't even be able to attend.

I'm a Freshman that attends Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School. I have a 4.0 G.P.A and over the course of this year I have managed to keep it above a 3.5 or higher. I have participated in sports at Lighthouse and played basketball and ran track in middle school. I also love football. This year I played my first year of high school basketball on the JV and Freshman team. I currently play on 2 AAU basketball teams, The Indy Saints & Team Assault. The Indy Saints is an AAU team ran by a church. They motivate and encourage us to be better then you we're the day before. They have helped mold me into the person I am today.

After high school, I would like to attend a Division 3 college or higher on a athletic scholarship. Maybe even attend an HBCU. While attending college, I will major in Business, Physical therapy & Engineering. My dream job is to be in the NBA, Engineer, or Auto mechanic.

I appreciate this opportunity to expand my future and have more doors open as I get older and prepare for my life after high school . I will definitely learn a lot on this college tour. Thanks again!
